Exhibition ``Workers' Club: Between Us`` Opened at the MCAM Gallery
Exhibition: „Workers’ Club: Between Us“ Adrijana Gvozdenović and Nela Gligorović
Gallery: Gallery of MCAM
Duration:: January 28 – February 28, 2025.
The exhibition Workers’ Club: Between Us, created by artists Adrijana Gvozdenović and Nela Gligorović and curated by Teodora Nikčević, was officially opened last night at the Gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro.
In her address to the audience, Nikčević emphasized that this project does not involve a conventional interaction between labor and observer but rather a much more complex process.
“Gvozdenović and Gligorović engage the audience in their work and every element of the exhibition. The audience is not treated as mere consumers of art but becomes an active participant in the creation of the work itself. Not only does it actively participate, but it also embodies an open work of art.”
In her speech, Nela Gligorović highlighted that through this project, they aim to dismantle the rigid, hierarchical structures of art institutions, within which the artist guarantees autonomy, and the curator acts as a butler or guardian of the art world.
“Institutionally defined roles keep all actors in the art system trapped within their positions or authorities, limiting exchange and the enhancement of experiences through collective work and art as a collaborative practice. The format of the Workers’ Club emerged as a result of discussions about work, conditions, and regulations.”
Adrijana Gvozdenović thanked all the collaborators on the project and announced a magazine promotion that will be held at the MSUCG Gallery during the exhibition. She added that the primary goal of the exhibition is not to point out shortcomings but to explore how these can become the basis for different approaches.
“We are interested in the possibility of change by creating an environment that challenges existing norms. I would like to move away from criticism that simply points fingers towards something that can be called the development of critical awareness—encouraging us to recognize our complicity in these problems,” Gvozdenović emphasized.
The Workers’ Club will host a series of activities, including workshops on the status of independent artists and cultural professionals, a guest lecture by Hana Ćurak, the promotion of the magazine Between Us: Work in Art (featuring authors Katja Praznik, Vladan Jeremić, and Violeta Kachakova), a catalog presentation, and guided tours of the exhibition.
The program and magazine are supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media of Montenegro and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Southeast Europe.
The exhibition will be open to the public until February 28, 2025
