Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro
The public institution, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, with its seat in Podgorica, is a specialised museum performing museum activities primarily in the domain of the contemporary art of Montenegro.
MCAM functions as a complex and dynamic institution that, in addition to its purpose of collecting, preserving, studying and promoting contemporary artistry through exhibition activities, scientific and professional publications, educational programs and workshops, actively cooperates with related cultural institutions and artists from the country and abroad. The MCAM Documentation Centre has the task of monitoring, documenting, preserving and studying contemporary art practices, phenomena and trends, while the Department for the Protection of Museum Material is responsible for expert opinions, conservation and restoration of contemporary artworks on the territory of Montenegro.
Foundation
MCAM was founded on March 31, 2023, by the Decision of the Government of Montenegro to transform the Public institution, the Centre for Contemporary Art of Montenegro, which was one of the most significant national cultural institutions and represented an important segment of the artistic and cultural life of Podgorica and Montenegro. The Centre was founded on April 4, 1995, through the integration of two cultural institutions: the Republic Cultural Centre and the Gallery of Art of the Non-Aligned Countries ``Josip Broz Tito``, and consequently, MCAM today possesses a very valuable and extremely diverse art fund from the former Gallery of Art of the Non-Aligned Countries, unparalleled in the whole Southeastern Europe, as well as the Centre’s rich art collection of Montenegrin and regional artists of modern and contemporary art.
The museum currently has 3 exhibition spaces, namely the Petrović Palace, Perjanik House, and the Gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro. MCAM is the organiser and executive producer of Montenegro participation in the prestigious contemporary art exhibition – the Biennale of Art in Venice.
Complex museum processes, as well as the particularity of the contemporary art expression, require specific conditions and space that the current capacities of the MCAM do not meet. Therefore, one of the priority missions of the MCAM, in cooperation with the Government of Montenegro and the Ministry of Culture and Media, is the construction of a new Museum building on the land site of the
former Morača Barracks, which itself should be a masterpiece of contemporary Montenegrin architecture.
