Last night, the international exhibition Museum yet to Be was officially opened at the Petrović Castle and the Perjanički Dom. At the opening, speeches were given by the Director of MCAM, Dr. Vladislav Šćepanović, and the exhibition curator Milica Bezmarević, who presented the audience with the concept of the exhibition and the ideas behind this international curatorial project.
The curatorial team of the exhibition consists of Milica Bezmarević (MCAM), Mišela Blanuša (MSU Belgrade), and Jovanka Popova (MSU Skopje).
The Director of MCAM, Dr. Vladislav Šćepanović, stated that this project arises from the belief that a museum is прежде всего a space of freedom—a space in which processes create meaning, not the other way around.
“A contemporary museum must be a place that reflects on the time we live in and responds to its challenges, while at the same time safeguarding the freedom of artistic expression and curatorial autonomy. With the exhibition Museum yet to Be, we aim to show that a museum can simultaneously be critical, inclusive, and open, and that its greatest value lies precisely in its ability to recognize and support the differences that shape contemporary society.”
The exhibition Museum yet to Be considers the museum not as a guardian of the past, but as a space that listens to the present and opens pathways toward the future.
“Museum yet to Be is conceived as a space in which we think about the museum—not the museum as it currently exists, but the museum as it could become,” said the exhibition curator Milica Bezmarević.
“In contemporary society, burdened by economic and political crises, museum institutions inevitably face the question: how to act ethically and how to remain relevant? With this exhibition, we seek to open the possibility of a different, non-linear, inclusive museum—one that does not rest on the logic of power, the market, or production, but on care, togetherness, and solidarity.”
Bezmarević emphasized that the theoretically articulated queer perspective here becomes a way of rethinking the museum as a space of possibility—a space in which the limitations of dominant norms are erased and room is made for worlds that have not yet been realized.
“Through the works of the artists, we invite the public to reflect on the museum as a site of experimentation: a place where new institutional practices are created, where diversity is nurtured, and where responsibility toward the community is built. This is a museum that does not seek to be merely a space for display, but a space of shared experience, encounter, and the creation of the future.”
The exhibition features works by the following artists: Cem A, Noor Abuarafeh, Basma al-Sharif, Kader Attia, Noorafshan Mirza & Brad Butler, Dante Buu, Yane Calovski & Hristina Ivanoska, CATPC, Ali Cherri, Keti Chukhrov, Jasmina Cibic, Coco Fusco & Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Aldo Giannotti, Igor Grubić, Adrijana Gvozdenović, Terike Haapoja & Laura Gustafsson, Vladan Jeremić & Rena Rädle, Nikita Kadan, Šejla Kamerić, Irena Lagator Pejović, Renzo Martens, Palestinian Museum, Mladen Miljanović, Ahmet Öğüt, Dan Perjovschi, Darinka Pop-Mitić, Roma Jam Session, Driton Selmani, Jonas Staal, Saša Tkačenko, Jelena Tomašević, Anton Vidokle, and Ala Younis.
