The Collection of New Media

The Collection of New Media at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro is dedicated to the preservation, development, and promotion of one of the most significant art forms of the 20th and 21st centuries. New media art encompasses both analog and digital technologies — photography, video, sound, moving images, internet art, interactive installations that include some of the previously mentioned elements, as well as virtual and augmented reality — in order to explore new ways of expression and communication.

This collection includes 21 works by renowned artists, as well as younger generations, providing space to explore the dynamic relationships between art, technology, and society. It focuses on the critical and ethical aspects brought about by the digital era, encouraging reflection on how contemporary technologies shape culture and society. From its beginnings, new media art has challenged traditional formats, while also critically engaging with mass media. Its use has been significant for preserving memories of actions, performances, happenings, and other avant-garde practices. With the advent of digital technology and the internet, new tools have been introduced, further expanding the field of artistic activity.

Through its development strategy, the New Media Collection aims to engage with contemporary and experimental artistic practices in the domain of moving images, sound installations, and all media and digital formats. By forming this collection, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro seeks to enhance understanding and appreciation of new media art.
