THE
HOUSE OF THE KING'S GUARD
The House of the King’s Guard is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Kruševac Palace Complex and serves as one of the exhibition spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro. Construction work on the House of the King’s Guard, located adjacent to the Petrović Castle, began in 1891 and was completed in 1894.
The two-story, rectangular building was originally intended to serve the King’s Guard. After the Balkan Wars, the House of the King’s Guard was repurposed for use as a city hospital. In 1984, when the entire complex was revitalized, the space of the House of the King’s Guard was adapted and converted into a gallery. During the cultural surge of the Gallery of Art of Non-Aligned Countries, numerous artists from India, Cyprus, Angola, Sri Lanka, Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico worked in the studios located on the ground floor of the gallery as part of their study residencies, and also exhibited in this space.
With the establishment of the Center for Contemporary Art of Montenegro, the gallery adopted a new concept, dedicated to contemporary artistic practice. Today, within the program of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, the space hosts thematic and solo exhibitions, book promotions, literary evenings, symposiums, concerts, and similar events.
