In its first three years of existence, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro has developed a dynamic space for the meeting of contemporary art, audiences, and international currents, confirming its role as one of the key cultural institutions in the country.

From its founding to the present day, the Museum has realized more than 60 exhibitions, as well as nearly as many accompanying and educational programs, opening space for contemporary creativity, dialogue, and the exchange of knowledge. Within the educational program, pupils and students represent one of the most important groups of visitors, who, through the Museum’s continuous activities, become active participants in understanding and creating contemporary art, contributing to the development of new audiences.

Over the course of three years, the Museum has hosted some of the most prominent names on the contemporary art scene, including Erró, Yoko Ono, Kiki Smith, Laibach, Sam Durant, Šejla Kamerić, and Odile Decq, as well as realized significant exhibition projects such as “Museum Yet to Be.” Particularly noteworthy is the project “Montenegro Today,” within which, at its first exhibition held across five locations, more than 100 Montenegrin artists were presented.

During the same period, the Museum also achieved a notable international presence through participation in the Venice Biennale, as well as through various forms of collaboration connecting the Montenegrin art scene with European and global contexts.

A special segment of its activities was marked by “Art Diverzija,” through which the first issue of a magazine was launched, along with the production and broadcast of more than 20 episodes of a television program in cooperation with RTCG.

A significant contribution to the preservation and valorization of cultural heritage is also reflected in the fact that the Collection of Art of Non-Aligned Countries has been granted the status of cultural property, further confirming its historical and artistic importance.

In the past period, the Museum has also actively worked on enhancing its collection. A total of 41 artworks have been acquired, while an additional 25 works have been donated by artists, continuously enriching and developing the fund of contemporary art in Montenegro.

The quality and dedication of the Museum’s work have also been recognized internationally.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro is the recipient of the prestigious Živa Award for leadership and team efficiency, granted by the Forum of Slavic Cultures. A particularly notable recognition is its placement among the eight finalists for the European Museum Academy Award for 2025, further affirming the Museum as a relevant institution on the European cultural scene.

At the same time, the Museum has entered a new phase of development through one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the field of culture—the construction of a new building for the Museum of Contemporary Art. The international competition for the conceptual architectural design brought together authors from around the world and produced innovative solutions that will define the future identity of this institution and its space.

The planned complex, to be located on the site of the former Morača barracks in the central zone of Podgorica, is envisioned as a contemporary cultural center integrating art, architecture, and public space, with the aim of further strengthening Montenegro’s position on the cultural map of Europe.

In the coming year, the Museum continues with an ambitious program that includes exhibitions by world-renowned artists such as Cindy Sherman and Mirosław Bałka, projects with the IRWIN collective, as well as a new presentation at the Venice Biennale. The second issue of the “Art Diverzija” magazine is also in preparation, further developing the Museum’s publishing and research activities.

Three years after its founding, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro marks not only an institutional anniversary, but an ongoing process of building a space for art, ideas, and new generations.
