Njegoš’s Poetic Universe

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, on the occasion of Njegoš Day of Culture, is organizing a lecture by Prof. Dr. Vesna Vukićević Janković entitled “Njegoš’s Poetic Universe.” The lecture will be held on Tuesday, November 11, at 7 p.m., at the House of the King’s Guard. The moderator of the event will be Suzana Popović, museum advisor for literary activities.

Njegoš’s literary work occupies a unique place in Montenegrin and South Slavic literature – not only as a supreme expression of national identity and spiritual continuity, but also as a universal poetic vision of humanity, the world, and the meaning of existence. His poetry simultaneously opens toward the mythical and the philosophical, the metaphysical and the moral, carrying within it the power of poetic thought that transcends epochs and borders.

The lecture “Njegoš’s Poetic Universe” by Prof. Dr. Vesna Vukićević Janković is dedicated precisely to this multilayered richness of meaning in Njegoš’s poetry. Starting from his ability to unite folkloric, mythological, and philosophical elements through poetic expression, the lecture will offer a contemporary perspective on the structure, aesthetics, and semantics of Njegoš’s work. Special emphasis will be placed on the inner mechanisms of his poetic language – from the construction of poetic images and rhythms to the interpretation of Njegoš’s ideas about humanity, freedom, and cosmic order.

Prof. Dr. Vesna Vukićević Janković, full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Montenegro, has long been a researcher of Njegoš’s oeuvre and is the author of several studies and monographs dedicated to his work, among which her book “Njegoš’s Poetic Universe” stands out. In her research, she interprets Njegoš’s poetry as an open system of meanings in which tradition and modernity, language and philosophy, art and spirituality intertwine.

Admission is free.
