The exhibition of contemporary Montenegrin art On the Line of Escape – Toward Possible Worlds was formally opened at the “Šibica” Gallery, and will remain on view until 2 November 2025.

A project of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, curated by Teodora Nikčević and Anja Marković, it presents works by younger and mid-career artists whose creative practice transcends conventional frameworks and forms. The exhibition concept builds on last year’s project Living Images, in which the curators explored socially engaged and critically reflective practices, as part of the Museum’s broader program Montenegro Today.

The display is conceived as a multimedia, multilayered, and non-linear network inspired by the “lines of flight” concept of philosophers Deleuze and Guattari. The works intersect in a dialogic and polemical field that opens multiple perspectives, while interactive installations, digital images, and hybrid video forms deconstruct traditional notions of the body, identity, ecology, media, and authorship, creating new relationships and meanings.

Fifteen selected artists address significant social issues and offer a broader insight into the contemporary social context of Montenegro—ranging from complex social, identity, religious, and political questions to personal and intimate experiences. Drawing inspiration from the idea of lines of flight, the curators recognize the artists’ position and engagement as an alternative mode of action: a space of freedom, critical reflection, and resistance that affirms contemporary Montenegrin art as a relevant voice both locally and internationally.
