Exhibition of Šejla Kamerić “Firstborn” at the Petrović Castle and The House of The King’s Guard, MCAM
Šejla Kamerić will have a solo exhibition titled “Firstborn” at the Petrović Castle and The House of The King’s Guard, MCAM, which will be open to the public from September 12th to November 10th, 2024.
Focusing on questioning identity values based on personal experience, as well as on the social pattern that involves stereotypically defined concepts of women and femininity, the exhibition “Firstborn” brings powerful artistic perceptions by Šejla Kamerić, rooted in pronounced empathy as a key mechanism of communication in her artistic work.
The exhibition is a result of a conceptual collaboration with curator Milica Bezmarević, whose long-term creative dialogue with Kamerić led to a joint conversation published in Šejla’s monograph “Mother is a Bitch.”
The exhibition will feature, for the first time, a work created specifically for MCAM, which addresses the mentioned themes and highlights issues related to the regressive perception of gender heritage.
Šejla Kamerić is a contemporary artist from Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized for her interdisciplinary approach, which encompasses film, photography, objects, drawings, and installations.
Addressing topics stemming from non-linear historical narratives and personal histories, Kamerić focuses on the politics of memory, forms of resistance in human life, and the distinctive characteristics of the female struggle.
Particularly valued for the social strength that arises from bold intimacy, her works emphasize empathy as the fundamental creative mechanism. Through her work, Kamerić challenges spaces of power, creating strong alternatives.
Her works are included in prestigious international collections, including TATE Modern; MACBA Barcelona; the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and others.
Kamerić has participated in significant group exhibitions and has exhibited solo in numerous international institutions, and her films have been shown at over 40 international film festivals.
Her work “Bosnian Girl” (2003) is considered one of the most significant pieces of contemporary art in the region and is part of the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro.
Her latest work, a public installation titled “Cease,” curated by Giulia Foscari, was displayed at Campo Santo Stefano in Venice during the early weeks of the 60th International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia. Kamerić is the recipient of the ECF Routes Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity, as well as the DAAD-Berlin Artist Residency Fellowship, the ONFURI Award at the National Gallery of Art in Tirana, and the Freedom Award from the International Peace Center in Sarajevo.
