Last night, the MCAM Gallery opened an exhibition by the group Laibach titled “AUSSTELLUNG! LAIBACH KUNST: THE REVOLUTION IS STILL GOING ON.”

The exhibition curator, Natalija Đuranović, stated at the opening that Laibach’s work not only reflects the world but actively transforms it by using symbols, uniforms, propaganda aesthetics, irony, and subversion to highlight the absurdities and dangers of totalitarian ideologies, challenging the audience to question their perception of reality.

“Laibach critiques political manipulation in art and music by satirizing totalitarian symbols and reinterpreting songs to alter their ideological messages. Their visual identity connects them to avant-garde movements, while their focus on collectivity suppresses individuality and lies at the core of Laibach’s practice.”

Đuranović further emphasized that their rejection of personal expression and use of anonymity allows them to adopt a universal perspective, addressing global political, cultural, and social themes: “Their art is deeply rooted in the past, yet also revolutionary and new, establishing a continuous connection between past, present, and future events.”

The exhibition was officially opened by the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Montenegro, H.E. Bernarda Gradišnik, who expressed her delight that the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro chose to showcase the internationally acclaimed Slovenian group Laibach in Montenegro. She added that the exhibition offers insight into the visual production and artistic credo of the group.

“Due to their provocative performances and ambiguous messages, Laibach initially sparked strong reactions from both political authorities and the cultural public, particularly in Slovenia, their then-home base. Their distinctive militaristic style and propaganda-inspired manifestos raised questions—was this provocation, irony, or a reflection of society? Although they have achieved international success and recognition, discussions about their artistic and political stances remain ongoing.”

Ivan Novak, one of the founders of Laibach, also addressed the audience, thanking the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro and its team for their professionalism and dedication during the exhibition’s realization. He highlighted the importance of such projects in fostering dialogue between artists and the public.

The exhibition is supported by Crnogorski Telekom and the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Montenegro and will be open to the public until January 18, 2025.
