As part of the “Night of Museums” event, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro is organizing a literary evening featuring renowned Montenegrin poet Boris Jovanović Kastel. The program will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, starting at 8 PM at  the House of The King’s Guard in Kruševac.

Boris Jovanović Kastel is recognized as the most prominent Montenegrin poet of Mediterranean orientation and one of the key figures in Mediterranean literature.

He has published more than thirty books of poetry and essays, with his works translated into over twenty languages. His poetry is included in numerous national and international anthologies, and his literary opus is marked by profound reflections on the Mediterranean, its cultures, and the destinies of its peoples.

Kastel’s work is seen as a unique mosaic of southern fates, where rich tragedy and sun-drenched pilgrimages lead toward self-discovery, allowing the poet to explore the impermanence of human life. His verses transcend Montenegrin or South Slavic literature and speak to universal themes, connecting all peoples of the Mediterranean.

Kastel is the recipient of numerous awards, including the “Ante Zemljar” Prize. Many literary theorists and writers, including Predrag Matvejević, have emphasized the importance of his poetry for Mediterranean literature. Reflecting on Kastel, Matvejević once said: “Had I held your books in my hands earlier, some pages of my Breviary would have been different—better. I have been reading you for some time now, and I believe—you are the herald of those who, after me, will say all that needs to be said about the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, and do so better than I ever could.”

During the literary evening, Boris Jovanović Kastel will present his extensive body of work, with selected poems read by Teodora Đukanović, a final-year student at “Slobodan Škerović” Gymnasium.

Admission is free.
