The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro has been granted a Special Recognition for Leadership and Team Efficiency as part of the “Živa” award, presented by the Forum of Slavic Cultures.

In a competition featuring 20 museums from 14 Slavic countries, this year’s jury noted that the leadership of this cultural institution in Montenegro is marked by a clear vision with defined goals and a firm determination that the country needs a new art museum with adequate capacity to meet the contemporary demands of artistic production, as well as to ensure the highest standards of preservation, presentation, and promotion of both existing and new museum collections.

“In just one year, the Museum’s management succeeded in putting this vision into action by securing the necessary conditions for building the future art museum in Montenegro, such as obtaining approvals from national and local authorities, a new location, community support, and architectural and other implementation plans,” the jury’s statement read.

The jury also highlighted that the museum’s team of curators has been actively involved in promoting the institution, and that the exhibition program has received international praise, contributing to the establishment of relations with related art institutions both regionally and globally.

“These are just some of the encouraging indicators that the museum is on the right path and has already revitalized the city, which deserves recognition,” the jury concluded.

At the presentation held in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, the director of MCAM, PhD Vladislav Šćepanović, emphasized that the museum is not just a space where art is preserved, but a cultural hub that strives to inspire, educate, and connect.

“Our mission is to be a bridge between art and the community, to open doors to artists, and to ensure that every visitor leaves with a unique experience of contemporary art. Our work transcends the boundaries of the exhibition space; we aim to shape and enhance the cultural scene, both locally and globally.”

The “Živa” award, established by the Forum of Slavic Cultures in 2012, aims to promote excellence in the field of movable and immovable cultural heritage in Slavic countries, support successful practices in the field of material cultural heritage, and enhance the exchange of knowledge and experiences.
