The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro is pleased to announce the opening of a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Šejla Kamerić, titled “Firstborn.” The grand opening will take place on Thursday, September 12, at 8:00 p.m., at Petrović Castle and the House of The King’s Guard.

The exhibition “Firstborn” will be open to the public from September 12 to November 10, 2024. Kamerić, through her works, which include film, photography, objects, drawings, and installations, explores themes of identity, gender stereotypes, and social norms. She places special focus on perception and female heritage, relying on strong empathy as a key element of her creative expression.

The exhibition emerged from a conceptual collaboration between the artist and curator Milica Bezmarević. Their creative dialogue, developed over several years during the exhibition’s conceptualization, is documented in a conversation published in Šejla’s monograph “Mother is a Bitch,” released by the renowned German publisher Distanz, with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro as one of the publishing partners.

A new work, produced by the artist for the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro, will be presented for the first time, directly addressing themes of retrograde perceptions of gender heritage.

Šejla Kamerić, an artist from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is known for her interdisciplinary approach. Her works have been exhibited in prestigious international institutions such as TATE Modern, MACBA in Barcelona, and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

Her piece *Bosnian Girl* (2003) is considered one of the most significant works of contemporary art in the region and is part of the collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro. Her latest work, a public installation titled “Cease,” curated by Giulia Foscari, was displayed at Campo Santo Stefano in Venice during the first weeks of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Kamerić is the recipient of the ECF Routes Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity, the DAAD-Berlin Artist Residency Fellowship, the ONFURI Award from the National Gallery of Art in Tirana, and the Sloboda/Freedom Award from the International Peace Center in Sarajevo.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore and experience works that have been showcased at numerous international exhibitions, as well as familiarize themselves with the artist’s latest achievements.

The exhibition is supported by Montenegro Telekom.
