Opening of the group exhibition “Silver Splash and Glitter Mash-Up” at the RTCG Gallery
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro (MCAM) announces the opening of the group exhibition titled “Silver Splash and Glitter Mash-Up”, which will be inaugurated on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 7 PM at the RTCG Gallery. The exhibition is curated by Anja Marković and features works by artists Milica Živković, Anastasija Kostić, Jovana Šarac, Ana Aleksić, Ivana Pejović, and Tamara Đurković.
The exhibition brings together contemporary artists who incorporate elements of shine and reflection in their work, exploring their symbolism and meaning in various social contexts – from the symbolism of celebration and joy to gender roles and the rebellious spirit of pop and glam rock. Through innovative visual expressions, the exhibition offers the audience an opportunity to reconsider their perceptions of the aesthetics of shine and its cultural position.
“From the earliest artistic practices, such as cave paintings, to the use of gold and silver, even powdered insect pigments, and finally, the emergence of latex and the glitter we know today, humans have sought to capture and attribute significance to shine, conditioned by the eye’s natural reflex to light,” wrote curator Anja Marković in the exhibition’s accompanying text.
Marković also emphasizes that, through this exhibition, she aimed to spark a discussion on why glitter and silver are still predominantly perceived as feminine elements and what they reveal about aesthetic norms and their social connotations.
“Silver and glitter have been associated with various cultural and artistic phenomena throughout modern and contemporary history. This exhibition aims to question whether these so-called feminine colors truly belong to only one gender, where aesthetics stand in Montenegrin contemporary art today, and what role glitter plays in our perception and psychological experience,” Marković adds.
We invite the audience to join us for the exhibition opening and discover the stories that shine and reflection carry through time, culture, and art.
