Plakat za promociju magazina Između nas: Rad u umjetnosti – datum, vreme, lokacija i imena učesnika

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro (MCAM) is organizing the promotion of the magazine “Between Us: Work in Art” on February 4, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the MCAM Gallery (Njegoševa 2), Podgorica.

The magazine, edited by Nela Gligorović and Adrijana Gvozdenović, is published by the Workers’ Club, an experimental space within MCAM. Graphic design is by Ivana Vujošević, with translations by Jovana Đurčević, Vanja Vukićević Garić, and Danilo Alagić. The project is co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media of Montenegro and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Southeast Europe.

The publication explores work in art through theoretical reflections and testimonies from artists and collectives, with a focus on the exploitation of labor in contemporary society.

In addition to the editors, contributors Katja Praznik, Violeta Kačakova, and Vladan Jeremić will participate in the promotion. The discussion will cover working conditions in the arts, the specific economy of artistic production, and strategies for collective action to achieve better working and living conditions.

Participants:

  • Katja Praznik is an Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo and the author of Art Work: Invisible Labour and the Legacy of Yugoslav Socialism. Her research focuses on the exploitation of artistic labor and work processes in art. She actively advocates for union organizing and the recognition of artistic labor as value-creating work.
  • Violeta Kačakova is a cultural manager and producer from Skopje, specializing in cultural production and policy development. She is the president of the Association for the Development of Music and Culture Kraj Vardarot, and her work includes capacity building and the fight for the rights of freelance artists.
  • Vladan Jeremić is an artist and cultural theorist from Belgrade. He holds a PhD from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade and has worked as a project manager and editor at Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Southeast Europe since 2010. Together with his partner Rena Raedle, he explores the social and political aspects of artistic practice.
  • Nela Gligorović is an art historian who investigates the system of cultural production. Through collaboration with institutions and independent organizations, she has delivered lecture cycles focusing on feminist critiques of dominant art history narratives.
  • Adrijana Gvozdenović is a visual artist with educational backgrounds in Brussels and Antwerp. Her research practice includes the project Archiving Artistic Anxieties, which addresses (self-)imposed pressures of success in the art world.

The Workers’ Club “Between Us” will remain open at the MCAM Gallery until February 28, 2025.
