The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro announces a

PUBLIC CALL FOR PROJECT PROPOSALS FOR THE REPRESENTATION OF MONTENEGRO AT THE 61ST INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION – LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2026

The 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice will be held from May 9 to November 22, 2026 (pre-opening days are May 6, 7, and 8).

La Biennale di Venezia represents an important opportunity to affirm Montenegrin contemporary art, as well as to present and promote Montenegro itself.
Montenegro has been participating independently in this prestigious international event since 2009.
The participation of Montenegro at the Venice Biennale is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media.

The theme of this edition of the Biennale is “In Minor Keys”, proposed by curator Koyo Kouoh.

Montenegro will be presented in the ArteNova gallery space, located at the attractive Venetian location Campo San Lorenzo.

GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION:

● Applications may be submitted by curators and artists whose artistic practice is related to Montenegro;
● The call is open to individual artists, artistic groups, and curators with curatorial projects;
● Project proposals must be submitted in electronic format.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION FOR PROJECT SUBMISSION:

● Biography of the applicant (curator and artist);
● Publications demonstrating artistic practice and achievements in the past five years;
● Project description with technical specifications;
● Visual documentation in adequate resolution;
● Projected budget for the proposed artistic project.

Applicants must submit their proposals in both Montenegrin and English, with the subject line:

BUDGET:

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montenegro will provide a budget of €50,000 for the production of the work and preparation of the exhibition space.

DEADLINE, INTERNATIONAL JURY, AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS:

The deadline for project submission is from June 5 to September 1, 2025.

The decision on the selection of the Montenegrin representative at the 61st Venice Biennale will be made by September 20, 2025, by an international jury composed of:

  • Ana Ivanović – art historian (Montenegro)
  • Miroslav Balka – visual artist (Poland)
  • Odile Decq – architect (France)
  • Gunnar B. Kvaran – curator (Norway)
  • Hélène Audiffren – director of the Carré d’Art Museum of Contemporary Art in Nîmes (France)

PROJECT EVALUATION CRITERIA:

● Artistic quality and innovation;
● Project concept;
● Communicativeness of the project;
● Technical feasibility and cost-efficiency.
